PS: Here's a bit more of the antics pertaining to the South Bend St Joseph's Indians (who are STILL the Indians)
Oct 13th, 1967 newspaper article about a rival team who was targeting the South Bend St Joseph's Indian's football team. The full article is below. One of the photos shows an "Indian" being burned in effigy, and the other shows a "dead Indian" with "Massacre" written above, on the float.
KHS whoops it up for Indians
Downtown Kokomo Thursday night belonged to the high school crowd.It was the night of the annual Homecoming Parade and everyone was in the swing of things.
Music, cheers and other noises beyond description showed the enthusiasm with which all teen-agers pitched in to make it a memorable event in the school year.
Some 30 floats traveled in the parade and all had one theme: Beat the Indians.
"The only good Indian is a dead Indian."
"We'll smash 'em, we'll scalp 'em. all"
referring to the South Bend St Josephs Indians football team, which will play the Wildcats tonight.
