1940 - Canadian Iroquois Not Aliens, Not Citizens.
From the March 24, 1940 edition of Hartford Courant:
Redmen
From the Waterbury Democrat
Newspaper editorial writers always get real enjoyment out of picking up an item like the one that cam out of Brooklyn, NY, the other day. The headlines stated - 50 Indians in Brooklyn Barred from WPA: Canadian Iroquois Not Aliens, Not Citizens.: These Indians have no definite citizenship status in this nation, but certainly if Uncle Sam can't give them one without too much red tape, then things are in a sorry state of affairs down at Washington. When the descendants of the original inhabitants of this country are put in the same category as "a man without a country" nationalism is being carried too far. No one can get around the fact that the Indians were here before the white man. They can't be relegated to the backwoods to be snipped at. Why not give them rights to which they are entitled, morally and really legally?
