In the 1980's, girls school sporting teams were sometimes called "Squaws." Erwin was one of the most popular, and in the 1990's they would launch a campaign to keep their name.
But the debate over the meaning of the word increased as more Native American's voiced their opinions on why it should not be a place name, used in newspapers or by school sports teams, and why it needs to be deemed derogatory by the public.
1983: "Words like that [squaw] are used to make people of color feel inferior, like they are less than human." .. The National Congress of American Indians is pushing for legislation to remove the word squaw - a term for female genitalia in certain languages - from federal lands and property.

Of course, not everyone agrees that the word is a racial slur.. even though it definitely is.
And yet, 100 years later, the word continues to insult and belittle American Indian women.
