1913: Wild West Films Blamed for Shooting of a Boy
An 11-year old boy was shot and as a result, "steps will be taken to have the city council censor the films shown in this city at moving picture theaters."
"An investigation of the facts of the case has revealed that the boys were inspired to play Indian and cowboy after continually visiting picture show houses where "wild west" scenes were portrayed. The boys have been playing "wild west" in the south part of the city, taking knives from their mother's kitchens and revolvers and guns from their fathers' rooms without the knowledge of their parents."
The boy is alive and his condition improving, but the attorney for the 11-year-old shooter is asking that the city censor and restrict violent films in the future.
